LIC Housing Finance 10-Session Trade Review
LIC Housing Finance 10-Session Trade Review
A cheap housing-finance stock at a difficult technical level.
What the chart actually says
The completed indicators end on 18 September 2026. The 21 September figures below were captured around 15:15 IST and were still incomplete.
| Metric | Reading | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| 18 Sep close | INR 548.15 | Above the 20-, 50- and 200-day averages, but below the 5- and 10-day averages. |
| 21 Sep partial session | INR 569.55; high INR 574.15; volume 3.74m | A strong move, but not a completed breakout and still below required volume. |
| RSI(14) | 55.15 | Positive without being overbought. |
| MACD | 7.97 vs signal 7.45 | Still positive, although the histogram had slowed from +5.43 to +0.52 in five sessions. |
| ATR(14) | INR 15.93, or 2.91% | Wide enough that tight stops can be hit during normal trading. |
| 20-session return | +10.29% | Strong intermediate momentum and 13.33 percentage points of excess return over Nifty 50. |
| Volume test | 5.32m shares | This is 1.25 times the completed 20-session average of 4.26m. |
The level that matters
LIC Housing Finance has already been rejected between INR 572.35 and INR 579.40. That makes INR 579.40 the decision point, not INR 570.
| Zone | Level | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Breakout supply | INR 572.35-579.40 | Repeated September rejection area and completed 20/60-session high. |
| Immediate support | INR 543.60-548.15 | 18 September low/close and the partial-session low. |
| Secondary support | INR 537.30-538.50 | 20-day average and recent swing support. |
| Major support | INR 529.60-533.15 | 50- and 200-day average cluster. |
| Major resistance | INR 598.20 | 52-week high and first meaningful target after confirmation. |
Trade plan
Preferred setup: confirmed breakout
- Trigger: Completed daily close above INR 579.40.
- Volume: At least 5.32 million shares.
- Entry: INR 580-584 in the next session.
- Do not chase: Cancel the entry if the next session opens above INR 587.35.
- Closing stop: INR 572.35.
- Hard invalidation: Intraday break below INR 562.
- Targets: INR 598.20, then INR 629.20.
No-trade conditions
Stay out if the close is INR 579.40 or lower, or if final volume is below 5.32 million shares. Do not average down below INR 562.
Time stop
Exit after five completed sessions if the first target has not traded. This is a short tactical plan, not a reason to turn a failed trade into a long-term holding.
Why the valuation looks cheap
At the reviewed INR 569.55 reference, LIC Housing Finance screened near 5.5 times trailing earnings and 0.76 times book value. The discount has a reason. Q1 showed better credit quality and profit growth, but the loan book barely moved.
| Q1 FY27 metric | Result | Read-through |
|---|---|---|
| Disbursements | INR 15,014 crore, +14.5% | Demand and origination improved. |
| Loan portfolio | INR 322,098 crore, +4.0% | Retention and balance transfers are still holding back growth. |
| Net interest income | INR 2,075.52 crore, +0.5% | Revenue growth was nearly flat. |
| Profit after tax | INR 1,488.32 crore, +9.4% | Profit improved faster than the loan book. |
| NIM | 2.58% vs 2.68% | Margin pressure remains the main operating weakness. |
| Stage-3 EAD | 2.14% vs 2.62% | Asset quality improved year on year. |
| ROAA | 1.85% vs 1.76% | Returns improved despite the weaker margin. |
| Capital adequacy | 25.48% at March 2026 | The capital buffer is strong. |
The risk the cheap multiple does not show
On 27 August, the company confirmed an admitted INR 1,322.39 crore personal-insolvency claim involving Subhash Chandra. LIC Housing Finance said security over mortgaged assets and remedies against the corporate borrowers remained intact.
The repayment plan was opposed by LIC Housing Finance and other lenders. A five-member NCLT bench later stayed the order that approved it. CNBC-TV18 also reported a CBI case concerning the alleged INR 1,322 crore fraud.
NCLAT deferred the lenders' challenge to 7 October, one day after this trade window ends. The RBI policy decision is due the same day. Carrying a tactical position into both events needs a deliberate decision, not inertia.
Why HDFC Bank still ranks higher
LIC Housing Finance has the cheaper valuation and a larger upside projection if the breakout works. HDFC Bank has the cleaner setup: stronger 5- and 10-session momentum, lower ATR as a percentage of price, better completed-session volume confirmation, and a current attributable analyst catalyst.
LIC Housing Finance ranked fourth in the nine-stock screen at 64.6/100. HDFC Bank remained first at 83.5/100. Preference changes only if LIC Housing Finance confirms above INR 579.40 with volume while HDFC Bank fails its own INR 740 trigger.
Bottom line
Wait for INR 579.40 and 5.32 million shares. Until both conditions are met on a completed session, the move is a test of resistance rather than a confirmed breakout.
Cheap valuation and improving asset quality support the watchlist case. Slow loan-book growth, margin pressure and the unresolved legal exposure keep it behind HDFC Bank for this 10-session window.
Frequently asked questions

The plan uses a closing stop at INR 572.35, hard invalidation below INR 562, and targets at INR 598.20 and INR 629.20.

The NCLAT hearing on the challenged Subhash Chandra repayment plan and the RBI policy decision are both scheduled for 7 October, immediately after the trade window.
